Well, it's official. My girls are getting big. Emma can almost climb into her crib (she hasn't figured out climbing out yet, thank goodness), Claire can sing basically any song you ask her to sing, they understand when things are funny/sad/scary, they have both gone number 1 and 2 in the potty multiple times and I haven't even started potty training (they just decided one day that they wanted to go in the potty)... oh and then there's the constant "MINE!" - I think they picked that one up from school.
With all this growing up I'm starting to - slowly - design and organize their big girl room. I don't want to get in the problem that most parents face: child decides to climb out of crib and boom... the next day you're running around trying to figure out the next step. Well, being the type A/planner psycho mom that I am, I've come up with a game plan... and even have some of it done!
Here's my inspiration... thanks to Pinterest and catalogues like PBK and RH Baby & Child, I've been able to pinpoint what I want their room to look like. Here it goes:
1. The girls will use the pine sleigh beds that were mine (and my sisters'). I'm going to remove the footboard on them so when you walk in the room you can actually see the bedding (the footboard is as high as the headboard). They are natural pine... but I kind of have this urge to gray wash them. (I hope my mom and dad just didn't keel over!). I do love that on the inside of the bed frames, Laura, Katharine and I have scribbled, written our names, etc... I definitely won't paint over that!
2. The girls will use my mom's white pom-pom coverlets. I'm thinking about sewing a twin sheet to the bottom of them to make a duvet - that may be a project when they're like five. The quilts are beautiful and in perfect condition. They have shams, too. I'll have to throw a monogram pillow on their bed - of course!
3. I'll buy some cute pink sheets from Target like
these. I don't want white sheets for them and I don't want to spend a ton of money (I'm thinking there will be accidents and who knows what... so spending lots of money on sheets isn't a priority).
4. The main fabric will be this Pine Cone Hill blue floral print. This picture does not do it justice! The blue is a little darker and the pinks are a lot bolder (like the ikat pillow in the pic)... I already bought two small shams from Jenny's store
here. They are adorable - definitely a grown-up girl look that I hope they can keep for a long time.
5. I found
this blog via pinterest and I am obsessed with her daughters' room! It's exactly what I had in mind... I love the way the books are displayed all the way up the wall - those ledges are from Ikea... she bought the wall letters from RH Baby & Child and she framed the girls' pictures above their twin bed. I am definitely doing that.
6. I want to incorporate some longer ledges to display art and photos... so I'll do that on the wall opposite the beds where their dresser/changing table/chair will be.
7. The girls have one window in their room - the twin beds will flank the window. The window has plantation shutters and I don't really want to do drapes... but this RH Baby and Child valance caught my eye... again the picture is funny - it's actually a brighter pink and would match the floral print perfectly!
8. Dash and Albert stripe rug also from Jenny's store adds a playful punch and the blue matches the bedding perfectly!!
9. For the glider that's in the room... if it even stays in the room, I would love to add that pink ikat pillow to the mix. I saw or read somewhere that every room should have about five fabrics... I think it plays off the rug and bedding really well.
10. Will include (but not in picture) - the girls' rocking horse, storage baskets and bench, end table (or small dresser) to go between beds, hints of gold (in frames and wall art)... all in all, should be able to do the room for under $250 since I have most of it! Yay!
